On sale in 40 countries and published in 4 languages, Colors is a truly global quarterly magazine with the premise to celebrate local diversity in the days of globalization. It's a magazine about the rest of the world, as they say.
Tibor Kalman and Oliviero Toscani created Colors in 1991, funded by the Italian cloth company United Colors of Benetton. Using bold photography to break any given taboos of the western society it became quickly popular.
After Kalman quitting Colors due a serious illness and Toscani quitting too because of arguing with Benetton over budgets and morals, the magazine has been passed on from one director to the next leading to unsteady qualities. Still, unforgettable was issue 52, called Trujillo, dedicated to the wild stories of a single woodchopper living in the loneliness of Patagonia. A true gem.
These days, Colors tries to get back to its early drive, also using the internet to reach a younger audience. Overall it's still an outstanding magazine and its disorientation make it a very human and surprising publication.
